SUUNS

On their sixth album, The Breaks, SUUNS find themselves lost in limbo. The trio of Ben Shemie, Joseph Yarmush and Liam O’Neill surrender more than ever to their pop instincts. And yet, with that same abandon, SUUNS explores a wider palette of sounds this time, far beyond the band’s usual beacons. The Breaks sees Shemie, O’Neill and Yarmush play unrestrainedly with loops, synths, samples and MIDI instruments, as if Tangerine Dream were a post-millennial band fond of downtempo trip-hop rhythms.

Created between countless plane trips, car journeys, van tours and text-message chains, The Breaks was marked by perseverance and a lot of trial-and-error. It’s a record that was composed with great freedom, leaving room for intimate outbursts – like the stunning ballad “Doreen” – as well as the vast, icy reveries of the majestic title track. The album immortalizes SUUNS at its most expansive, exploratory and exuberant, distilling a sense of being lost and enlightened at the same time, with intensity at 11. And do you know what? The machine is still in motion.
