WHITECHAPEL
Whitechapel – Hymns in Dissonance
With Hymns in Dissonance, Whitechapel delivers their heaviest and most brutal album to date. “No holds barred; there is nothing nice about it,” says guitarist Alex Wade. The record tells the story of a cult leader gathering followers, whose evil chants open a portal for him to enter.
Tracks 3 to 10 represent dissonant hymns tied to the seven deadly sins—deliberately contrasting with traditional melodic hymns. Vocalist Phil Bozeman explores new vocal textures, pushing his range further than ever before.
Written in 2023 at Zach Householder’s studio, who also produced the record, HID marks a new chapter of independence for the band. The artwork, designed by Rob Borbas, features a mysterious mask symbolizing the cult leader.
Musically, HID returns to primal heaviness, steering away from the personal stories of The Valley and Kin. Hints to the band’s early days, like the Drop A tuning on “Hate Cult Ritual,” will please longtime fans. “This is a return to our roots,” says Bozeman, “a tribute to what made us.”
