DEUS never really had a philosophy. Nor ever wanted one. Still, they have remained true to certain principles. “You don’t want to do the same thing over and over again, but you have your own style,” says Tom Barman, genial frontman of the cult art-rock band. “You want to try new things and just react to what feels fresh at the time.” Such is the case with “How To Replace It,” their eighth studio album and first in a decade; distinctive and inventive, melodic but resolutely idiosyncratic.
Unique. And, above all, unmistakably DEUS.

Elias Devoldere is not only one of the most brilliant drummers on the Belgian scene. In recent years, he has also made a name for himself as a songwriter, composer and singer. With the release of his first solo album, we can also add producer to that list. We got to know Elias as a drummer with Nordmann, Robbing Millions, John Ghost, SUWI and Hypochristmutreefuzz, among others. After an ep, Kaiku, released in 2021, Bloomed > Exploded is his first full-length album as a solo artist.
Everything blooms,” he explains in the title of his debut album. Until it explodes and something else can emerge from it. In this case, this complete cycle is an intimate coming-of-age album with elusive atmospheres, bright melodies and subdued rhythmic patterns.
For the recordings, Elias used synthesizers and drum machines during a period of solitude in France.
“Explode / Boalis is one of the first songs I wrote for this album, and it’s essential to the atmosphere, mainly based on electronic elements.Later I used ‘real’ drums on most of the other tracks, as well as contributions from other musicians, but the overall atmosphere is very consistent”.Pure” is how Bruno Ellingham, the British engineer who mixed the album, describes it. Much to the delight of Elias, who enlisted Ellingham because of his previous work with bands such as Massive Attack and Portishead.Portishead. “When I heard the end result, I felt that he really captured the essence of the original demos.That means to me that this album is a true reflection of who I am. ‘Take a dive/ Into the place where it’s more quiet,’ as I sing in the last song, kind of sums it all up for me.”
